Who we are?
- About us SCAR is a group of committed animal lovers concerned with the poor state of animal welfare in the Mauritian society especially with the phenomenon of stray animals in our society. At the outset, SCAR was a Facebook group created by the now President Mr Sameer Golam (“Sam”).
- Our vision SCAR’s program is designed not only to humanely and effectively address the stray overpopulation problem, but also to help people and dogs live more comfortably in each other’s presence. Most stray dogs are “community dogs,” which means they live within a certain territory or neighbourhood and rely somewhat on human charity for survival.
- The Extent of the Social Problem In 2013, Humane Society International (HSI) 1 conducted an island-wide survey to estimate the number of street dogs present in Mauritius. The results indicated that there was a significant overpopulation with approximately 55,000-60,000 street dogs, which is equivalent to one street dog for every 20 human residents.
Our little story and rationale of being
However, given the upsurge in the number of strays following the unfortunate events happening with the Government Agency responsible for animal welfare i.e. MSAW, there was a wake-up call for this group of friends and they realised that more needed to be done if our country were to improve the welfare of stray animals in our society.
SCAR rescues strays daily and goes through a tedious process of vet care provision, foster care, and eventually arrange for adoption under specific conditions.

SCAR's Approach
SCAR adopts the Catch, Neuter and Release(CNR) Approach to animal welfare. This program has proven very efficient by HSI in countries like Bhutan, India and others with similar socio-economic backgrounds as Mauritius. The program consists of catching the strays in an area, sterilising and vaccinating them and releasing them after observation in the same area. This ensures that the dog population will not increase and with continuous monitoring ensures their good health too
Our primary purpose and mission is to engage in projects to improve animal welfare in Mauritius, focusing mainly on stray cats and dogs.
Today, SCAR has 18,000+ followers (and counting) on social media who help with the adoption and fostering process.
